Circulatory Anatomy and Physiology, the Conduction System of the Heart

The muscle that composes the heart consists of excitable cells, meaning that this special tissue is able to generate and conduct electrical impulses that stimulate the heart to contract.

The cardiac conduction system includes the sinus node, the atrioventricular node, the bundle of His and the Purkinje fibres. They form a network of specialised cardiac cells that coordinates the synchronous contractions optimising the heart filling and its ability to propel blood.
