The Power of Infographics
Infographics
Infographics is a visual presentation of information or data that may include diagrams, graphs, and other images accompanied by minimal text. Infographics are designed to give an easily understood overview, often of a complex subject. The popularity of infographics has increased dramatically in recent years, and include Data Visualisation, Information Design and Editorial Infographics.
Data Visualization
Data visualization focuses on creating a visual representation of data in a clear, organised and succinct form, which is especially helpful when analysing large data sets. In this age, where often there are big data sets, it is essential to help people make sense of numbers and easily understand the stories that such large data sets tell. For instance, using colour to indicate correlation, choose the appropriate
font size to show the size of a particular element, and position to define patterns, this helps people to absorb, process and make sense of large sets of data. In addition to data visualisation, an optimal design represents a tool and can be utilised to communicate effectively any type of information, such as hierarchy, anatomy, processes, correlations, chronology and so on. The viewer engagement is further enhanced, because optimal data visualization often incorporates elements of artistry. Indeed an optimally executed data visualization is both meaningful and beautiful, enabling the viewer to understand and interpret data more easily, while appreciating its aesthetic appeal.
Information design
Information design also focuses on displaying information effectively and efficiently. The main difference from data visualization is that information design displays concepts and mechanisms, rather than information derived from specific data points. The information design can be in the form of organizational diagrams, timelines, or flowcharts, clarifying structures, functions and order, in a way that would not be possible to achieve by using text only. Information design has the goal to communicate a specific message in a way that is clear, engaging and universal. Some examples of information design may include anatomical illustrations, cartography or instructional diagrams.
Editorial Infographics
Since infographics became very popular and highly shareable content, many publications in different fields are now including infographics to better engage the readers. Indeed, a large number of publications are increasingly utilising infographics content to replace more traditional editorial features. This trend is also observed in the commercial sector, with many large corporate businesses and start-ups blogs that are using infographics to provide interesting insights into the industry and bring attention and popularity to their sites. Thus, infographics also represent extremely valuable tools in marketing.
